• Curtis Lopez-Galloway - Desert Stone Management

At the Desert Business Association, we are proud to spotlight members who support the stability and care of our local communities. This month, we feature board member Curtis Lopez-Galloway (He/Him) of Desert Stone Management, a property management company based in Palm Springs.

With over a year in business and experience in the property management industry, Desert Stone Management provides professional services for HOAs and common-interest developments, seasonal home watch, apartment and multi-family communities, and commercial properties. Originally from Benton, Illinois, Curtis brings a practical, hands-on approach to property management, with attention to detail, consistency, and care. Desert Stone Management is committed to helping owners and associations protect their investments and maintain strong communities throughout the Coachella Valley.

We asked Curtis a few questions in order to get to know him better:

What inspired you to start your business, and what makes it unique in Coachella Valley?
After many years of working for a company and leading a nonprofit, I felt the need to go out on my own to build a legacy. We are the only fully LGBTQ+-owned management company in the Valley.

How does your business support or engage with the LGBTQ+ community and the greater Coachella Valley?
We work in tandem with my non-profit, the Conversion Therapy Survivor Network, to help conversion therapy survivors find community and healing through weekly meetups.

What has been one of your biggest learning experiences as a business owner so far?
The Coachella Valley is its own beast as far as getting business. While the rest of CA is very to-the-point, get things done now, the Valley is much more laid-back, and clients will take their time making decisions.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business today, especially in our region?
Make sure you get connections quickly, if not before you start. They are key. Also, ensure that you have a financially stable foundation. Ensure you can support the business should a sales downturn occur, as they do here in the summer.

What does being an LGBTQ+ or allied business owner mean to you personally?
Although I may struggle to get the business of non-LGBTQ people. It also means I am determined to succeed.

What is one challenge facing small businesses right now, and how are you navigating it?
Shrinking affordability and rising business costs. Taking it one step at a time and not overextending the business financially.

What is something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business?
We do not, in fact, manage actual rock or stone resources. Although I do know quite a bit about geology and rock formations.

What is one local business you admire or love to support?
I really love Luchador Brewing Company; they aren't a DBA member (yet), but I love their craft beer, ambiance, and the fact that you can play games around their outdoor fireplace.

What is your favorite thing about doing business in the Coachella Valley?
That everyone is so friendly, and that everyday I get to look at the beautiful valley we all live in.

One word that describes your business.
    Mindful

    Coffee, tea, or something stronger?
Coffee and then wine after work.
