• Eric Cano Kaminski & Juan Kaminski Cano - Kreem

At the Desert Business Association, we are proud to spotlight members who turn strong values into meaningful businesses. This month, we feature Eric Cano Kaminski (he/him), and Juan Kaminski Cano (he/him), co-owners of Kreem, a Palm Springs favorite for hand-crafted artisanal ice cream and exceptional coffee.

With backgrounds in compliance, hospitality, and operations, Eric and Juan bring care and intention to everything they do. Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Hidalgo, Mexico, they built Kreem around inclusivity, compassion, and ethics. With organic dairy, creative flavors, and vegan options, Kreem offers something for everyone while contributing to Palm Springs’ vibrant, diverse small-business community.

We asked Eric and Juan a few questions in order to get to know them better:

What inspired you to start your business, and what makes it unique in Coachella Valley?
The pandemic led us to spend more time working remotely and spending time in our ultimate retirement destination.  Our blend of skills pointed toward the hospitality industry, and the opportunity to run a turnkey business was more than compelling.  We have now taken the brand to new heights, introducing new flavor to an awesome product.

How does your business support or engage with the LGBTQ+ community and the greater Coachella Valley?
We support national LGBTQ+ efforts (HRC, The Trevor Project) and local efforts like The Community Food Bank at The Center.  We also promote Pride, IBC, and any LGBTQ+ events in the area.  We strive to improve our community by investing in what matters most: our people, the company, and social health.

What has been one of your biggest learning experiences as a business owner so far?
Keep people at the center - respect and provide for your staff, honor customer requests whenever possible, and lead with grace.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business today, especially in our region?
Be aware of the seasonality in our community and enjoy the increased business that it provides but work to build a loyal local customer base to help you through the lean times.

Where do you see your business in the next five years?
We are certainly hoping for cautious growth and need to be creative outside of the current brick and mortar, since lease expenses can torpedo a business.

Why is being part of the Desert Business Association important to you?
Community - especially in these times of upheaval in the current political environment.  This group continues to be a beacon, highlighting our uniqueness and outstanding contributions to the Coachella Valley.

What is one challenge facing small businesses right now, and how are you navigating it?
Low tourism is a constant concern, so continuing to demonstrate the welcoming environment that Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley nurture is always important.

What is something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business?
People are generally shocked when they learn that we make all the ice cream in-house.

What does a typical day look like for you as a business owner?
Every day is a little different, but the constant is that 4-5 days a week, we are in the kitchen churning ice cream.

    Coffee, tea, or something stronger?
    Coffee
