With a background in corporate America and inspired by her grandfather’s leadership, Joy founded Diligence Security Group to deliver people-centered security rooted in accountability and trust. For six years, her team has provided comprehensive services including armed and unarmed guards, patrols, CCTV, fire alarms, executive protection, and event security. By combining trained personnel with technology-driven solutions, Diligence Security Group creates safer, more welcoming environments for businesses and communities alike.)
We asked Joy a few questions in order to get to know her better:
How does your business support or engage with the LGBTQ+ community and the greater Coachella Valley?
We support the LGBTQ+ community by fostering an inclusive workplace, hiring diverse talent, and ensuring all team members are trained in professionalism, de-escalation, and cultural sensitivity. In the Coachella Valley, the company engages through partnerships with local organizations, support of community events, and security services that prioritize safety without over-policing. This approach reflects a commitment to visibility, equity, and trust, helping create environments where all clients, guests, and community members feel respected, protected, and valued.
What has been one of your biggest learning experiences as a business owner so far?
That sustainable growth requires strong systems and the right people, not just hard work. Building scalable operations, investing in training, and learning to delegate effectively have been critical to maintaining service quality while expanding.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business today, especially in our region?
My advice is to know your market deeply and build relationships early. In the Coachella Valley, reputation and trust matter just as much as pricing or services. Get involved locally, listen to community needs, and be consistent in how you show up.
Where do you see your business in the next five years?
I see us as a leading regional security provider with a strong presence throughout Southern California, including expanded operations in the Coachella Valley.
Why is being part of the Desert Business Association important to you?
Being part of the Desert Business Association allows me to connect with like-minded LGBTQ+ and allied business owners who believe in lifting each other up.
What does being an LGBTQ+ or allied business owner mean to you personally?
Leading with authenticity and purpose, showing up fully as myself while creating a business that values inclusion, respect, and opportunity. Representation matters, and I’m proud to help open doors for others while building something meaningful.
What is one challenge facing small businesses right now, and how are you navigating it?
Like many small businesses, rising costs and workforce challenges have been significant. We navigate this by staying adaptable, investing in technology and training, and building strong internal systems that allow us to grow sustainably while maintaining high service standards.
What does a typical day look like for you as a business owner?
No two days are the same. My days often include overseeing operations, supporting our team, meeting with clients, and planning future growth. At the core of every day is a focus on safety, leadership, and continuous improvement.
